چکیده

We consider the 9-node shell element referred to as the MITC9 shell element in plate bending solutions and present a simplified mathematical analysis. The element uses bi-quadratic interpolations of the rotations and transverse displacement, and the “rotated Raviart-Thomas” interpolations for the transverse shear stresses. A rigorous mathematical analysis of the element is still lacking, even for the simplified case of plate solutions (that is, flat shells), although the numerical evidence suggests a good and reliable behavior. Here we start such an analysis by considering a very simple particular case; namely, a rectangular plate, clamped all around the boundary, and solved with a uniform decomposition. Moreover, we consider only the so-called limit case, corresponding to the limit equations that are obtained for the thickness t going to zero. While the mathematical analysis of the limit case is simpler, such analysis, in general, gives an excellent indication of whether shear locking is present in K. J. The Mitc7 and Mitc9 Plate Bending Elements

We present in this paper two plate bending elements that have been proposed and mathematically analyzed previousIy by Bathe, Brezzi and Fortin: the MITC7 (a triangular) element and the MITC9 (a quad~late~l) element. The formation of these elements is summarized and example solutions are given that demonstrate the high accuracy of these elements. 1. lNTRODUCHON Although much research effort has ...

An Efficient Co Finite Element Approach for Bending Analysis of Functionally Graded Ceramic-Metal Skew Shell Panels

In this article, the prominence has been given to study the influence of skew angle on bending response of functionally graded material shell panels under thermo-mechanical environment. Derivation of governing equations is based on the Reddy’s higher-order shear deformation theory and Sander’s kinematic equations. To circumvent the problem of C1 continuity requirement coupled with the finite el...

Finite Element Analysis of Free Vibration of the Delaminated Composite Plate with Variable Kinematic Multilayered Plate Elements

Composite laminates are prone to delamination. Implementation of delamination in the Carrera Unified Formulation frame work using nine noded quadrilateral MITC9 element is discussed in this article. MITC9 element is devoid of shear locking and membrane locking. Delaminated as well as healthy structure is analysed for free mode vibration. The results from the present work are compared with the a...

Insight into finite element shell discretizations by use of the ‘ ‘ basic shell mathematical model ’ ’ Phill

The objective of this paper is to gain insight into finite element discretizations of shells using the basic shell mathematical model and, in particular, regarding the sources of ‘‘locking’’. We briefly review the ‘‘basic shell mathematical model’’ and present a formulation of shell finite elements based on this model. These shell finite elements are equivalent to the widely-used continuum mech...

A New Eight Nodes Brick Finite Element Based on the Strain Approach

In this paper, a new three dimensional brick finite element based on the strain approach is presented with the purpose of identifying the most effective to analyze linear thick and thin plate bending problems. The developed element which has the three essential external degrees of freedom (U, V and W) at each of the eight corner nodes, is used with a modified elasticity matrix in order to satis...
